Role
Web Design and Brand Identity
Overview
Create a website and branding identity that showcase CarbonShack’s architectural projects and educate users on reducing their environmental footprint.CarbonShack is a pioneering architecture firm that embraces a holistic approach to sustainable design. With skilled artisans, in-house architects, and interior designers, they create eco-friendly homes inspired by the natural world. Their seamless integration of custom interiors, home furnishings, and construction ensures exceptional quality and a deep commitment to sustainability.
CarbonShack approached Kilter with the need for a brand identity and a website that could serve two purposes: highlight their portfolio and educate users about reducing carbon footprints. The challenge was to balance these goals while reflecting the company’s unique focus on sustainability and organic aesthetics.
In collaboration with the Kilter team, I helped create a split-screen website and a cohesive brand identity that combined functionality and storytelling, delivering an engaging and educational user experience.
Key Challenges
- Balancing their portfolio showcase with educational content.
- Communicating complex data, like embodied energy calculators, in a digestible and engaging way.
- Reflecting their brand identity through visual design and user experience.
SPLIT-SCREEN FUNCTIONALITY
Research
I conducted an analysis to study how other firms balance portfolio and educational content. From there, I explored ways to visually organize and prioritize various types of information. Using a split-screen functionality emerged as a solution to balance storytelling and data presentation effectively. We looked into CarbonShack’s use of biological and organic materials would help to strengthen their identity.
Ideation
When ideating, I developed wireframes for a split-screen template. One side shows educational content, and the other side is a portfolio showcase. We wanted a simple layout to clearly reflect CarbonShack’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
When thinking about the branding, we were drawn to their use of organic elements from their interior design. We wanted those natural patterns to inform the branding system.
Solution
The final website incorporates a split-screen functionality, creating an experience for users to explore both CarbonShack’s portfolio and educational material. Educational material includes an integrated calculator for users to engage with and includes actionable insights. This material is paired with bright and visual projects showcasing their architectural work.
A visual identity inspired by natural biology reinforces their commitment to sustainability.
Impact
The website design achieved the goal of providing an intuitive platform that showcase CarbonShack’s work and a user-friendly educational experience that empowers users to take steps towards sustainability. The results from the client were positive as the website aligned with their brand mission.
